• Art in Schools

The Art in Schools Project is the first of the Collective's funded projects. It will run March to May 2005 and will take an exhibition of the Collective members' works to six primary schools in Fenland. Each exhibition runs for a week and is open to the public. In addition, an artist, recruited by the Collective will run two arts workshops in each school.

  • Manea School

Roger Symonds ran the first workshops in Manea School. The very young children made and decorated fish, which were suspended on fine nylon thread, creating a 3D under sea installation. The older children worked together in groups to construct large displays of Fred Flintstone. Around 140 children were involved in the workshops.

  • Benwick

Susie Moore ran the workshops in Benwick. A splendid river scene was produced and hung in the village hall together with our members' work. In the second workshop the older children produced five large wall hangings using stencils on fabric. We had over thirty people through the doors on the first day and a host of excited and enthusiastic children showing off their work.

The schools was very pleased. The Headteacher, Gill Thomas said,

'The children benefited such a lot from the project. It was an experience which we couldn't have provided without the Fenland Visual Arts Collective. The exhibition was interesting and informative and involved the whole community'

  • Kinderley School, Tydd

Louise Stebbing ran the workshops for us. They were smaller groups than in the previous weeks but they produced an inspiring collaborative effort. Two textured dispays were made full of colour and atmosphere. There was a constant stream of people through on the main day of opening.

Elaine Carney speaking for the school said,
'It was a huge success, attracting many local people into the school. It wasn't just parents who came which was great. Our aim is to ensure that we are a community facility and it was encouraging to see that many people in the villages were interested in seeing the artwork by both the children and the local artists'
